House Bill 9 passes thanks to bi-partisan support for fairness

The Passage of HB9 on the House floor by a 33-31 vote was far closer then we could have predicted. Among those voting yesterday 2 Republican Representatives stood for fairness and justice despite the guaranteed backlash they would receive. Representative Fox-Young and Representative McCoy are two true examples of how this fight for fairness crosses all barriers.

The opposition has come out strongly against them. Since their vote, their offices have been bombarded with virulently hateful e-mails and phone calls.  Please take this opportunity to thank them for having the courage to do the correct thing. If you are a constituent in either of these districts please contact your representative’s office and extend your gratitude. The Fight for Fairness lives another day because of 33 legislators chose to do the correct thing for ALL New Mexico families

HB9: The Next Step

The Domestic Partnership Rights and responsibilities act is now on the Senate side. With the help of many key legislators we were able to get through the House quickly. We anticipate the Senate side will be longer and grueling. The first hurdle will be Senate Consumer and Public Affairs Committee. This is where the bill was initially tabled last year and we expect a close vote again this year. We anticipate the bill will be heard no earlier than Thursday the 31st. Once we are aware of when the bill is scheduled, we will send out an e-blast.

“Destruction of Marriage Act” on the move

The DOMA introduced by Representative Nora Espinosa made it out of the Rules Committee by a 7-4 vote, based on a technicality. It has been sent to House Consumer and Public Affairscommittee.  It has yet to be placed on the agenda but we will keep you informed of any movement.

Kyle and Josh on Domestic Partnership Rights PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 13 January 2008
Here's the deal:  I filled out an online survey about gay couples and was contacted by the ACLU to do a short video for Domestic Partnership Rights in NM.  Josh and I drove up to Albuquerque where they filmed us and did a remarkable job editing what we though were pretty slim pickings.  Here is your chance to see us--another couple minutes toward our 15 minutes of fame (remember If Walls Could Talk?  That was about 7 minutes.)
